Robert had served in the Royal Air Force firstly for his National Service and then for a further three years before joining the aircraft manufacturer DeHavilland. At DeHavilland’s Hatfield base, Robert worked on the Comet flight test and, in his spare time, he learned to fly. He quickly realised that pilots were buying many of the products they needed from Germany or the USA and that there was a space in the market for a British manufacturer.
